Most evenings do not end; they just dissolve into scrolling. The day never quite closes, so sleep starts late and rest feels thin. A tea ritual works not because tea is magic, but because it gives the evening a shape: a beginning, a middle, and an end.
Set it up the night before, if you can
Put the pot, the cup, and the tea where you can reach them without searching. Fill the kettle. The ritual fails most often at the preparation step, when you are tired and every small obstacle is a reason to skip it. Make the start as easy as opening a door.
The ten minutes
Minutes 0 to 2: water and warmth. Boil the kettle. Warm the pot and cup with hot water, then pour it away. Put the phone in another room. This is not a rule to prove discipline; it is the whole point. Ten minutes without a screen is the ritual.
Minutes 2 to 5: the first infusion. Add the leaves, pour the water, and wait. Watch the leaves open. Smell the steam. Pour the first cup slowly, and drink it without doing anything else. No news, no messages, no planning tomorrow.
Minutes 5 to 10: the second infusion. Steep the leaves again. This cup is usually softer and easier than the first. Sit with it. If thoughts come, let them come and go without following them into work. When the cup is empty, wash the pot and cup. That small act of tidying is the ending.
What to drink in the evening
Choose something you enjoy, not something you think you should drink. Many people prefer a roasted oolong or a ripe pu-erh in the evening because they taste warm and settled. Others prefer a light tea and simply drink less of it. If caffeine keeps you awake, drink earlier in the evening, use fewer leaves, or keep the ritual short. The ritual is the point, not the dose.
If you miss a night
Miss a night of your 10-minute tea ritual, and start again the next night. A ritual that requires a perfect streak becomes another chore, and chores do not calm anyone. Ten minutes, most nights, is already a different evening from no minutes at all.
The day will still be busy tomorrow. But tonight, your 10-minute tea ritual gave it an ending. That is enough to start with.
